Well after a year of looking I will finally pick up my 96-26x on Sunday. Paid $10,000. 8 hp motor. (good deal?) It seems to be in good condition. Since I will not be able to get it into the water until next Satuday, I would like to preform any maint before hand. Does anyone have any links to motor sevicing or suggestions on what to preform? I will be in/on the boat after work every night so should be doing something. Thanks..............Rob

Get the service manual for the outboard.

Regardless of what outboard you have, you need to have the information in the service manual. An outboard motor is very simple, but the average user seems totally ignorant and often confused about diagnosing problems and doing what are really simple repairs. It isn't rocket science. Information in the service manual will simplify maintaining your outboard, AND save you money.

Right

and, like buying a used car, you might expect to change the fluids and examine the plugs as initial steps. Run it in a trash can of water for tests; make sure the water pump is functioning.
