I have recently been troubled by allergies while in my v-birth. ive bleached the carpet on walls and cushions without any change. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Thanks.

How old is the boat? you prolly have mold behind the carpeting that the only way you'll get all the mold out is to rip out the carpeting and clean it good and eaiter put up new carpeting or something else on the walls. The mold could also be in the cushions. If the boat is sealed up at the time the mold could be comming from anywhere and being in the air traveling to where you are. The most common places you will probably find mold is behind the carpeting on the walls and under an old teak and holly sole. You will need to do a lot of cleaning. This is currently a problem Im dealing with too on a 1985. you can try some different mold products like mold off or just make some mixes of lemon juice and water. The lemon juice is great for killing and preventing mold growth.

If it IS mold,
you might get relief from a heavy dose of O2. You can rent a commercial ozone generator like those used in hotels to get rid of tobacco smoke odors. Ozone WILL kill mold, but you don't want to be in the boat while you're "ozoning" it, and be advised that it will tarnish brass and accelerate rust, and isn't good for rubber products either. That being said, ozone has the capacity to get everywhere on your boat, and for a once-in-a-while solution it might be worth investigating.

Yes, its probably mold. Some boats have the water tank under the V-Berth and with the pump and plumbing it becomes a wet dingy place where mildew and mold thrives. I keep a dehumidifier in the boat during the summer months to keep the interior dry and free of that musty odor. I never liked carpet in the hull interior and much prefer panelling or "plather" as it is easier to keep clean and hygenic. Clean as much as you can and take some of over the counter antihistamines to help with the symptoms.

There is a product you can buy at camping and marine stores that is cut to fit and looks like an extra-thick paper towel, but wider. It goes under your bunk cushions and absorbs condensation. It keeps the bottom of your cushions dry and thus inhibits mold growth. Also, when you are not using the boat, prop up the cushions in all areas and use an electric air-dryer. You also may have mold growing on the headliner and this will help.
