All things Sunscreen

I consider myself to be a sunscreen aficionado and wanted to share what I have learned... I also didn't want to hijack the pressure washing teak thread but @jon hansen mentioned spray sunscreen in post #14 here

... and there is a second reason to ban spray screen .

I have an advanced case of vitiligo (an auto-immune response to melanin) and so I have large patches of skin that are essentially albino.

.

I also love spending a lot of time in the sun which is true of all sailors.

Although I spend a lot of time outdoors... I almost never get a sunburn. Here are a few things I have learned...

1) Applying sunscreen to sweaty skin has very little benefit.
2) Spray screen sits on top of your skin and is easily rubbed off.
3) Lotion is absorbed into the skin and holds it effectiveness longer.

Here is my process for sun-safe skin.
  • Apply sunscreen lotion when your skin is cool and dry and you are not perspiring. I recommend first thing in the morning. Work it in and then let it dry while you drink your morning coffee. Then apply a second coat to get those small spots you missed the first time. This is usually enough to last me the entire day.
  • If I am having a particularly sun-filled day, I find some shade around 1:00 PM and dry off, cool off and apply a third coat.
Here are some don'ts...
  • Sun screen applied to sweaty skin usually results in some streaky sunburns.
  • Spray screen does not last all day and will rub off with friction. I think it is a waste of money
  • Some sunscreens are really hard on the eyes if sweat runs down into your eyes...if you find a brand that does not burn your eyes, stick with that one...For me, I find the Banana boat brand in the orange bottle to be one of the kindlier brands. It also works into the skin better and does not leave my skin feeling greasy.
YMMV

I use spray so I can get my back myself. It's so convenient. And I definitely burn less with it, and like how it doesn't make my palms all greasy!
Any tips for getting your back with lotion?

Good point....
I use one that looks a lot like this ... I picked it up at Walgreens many years ago. I don't know if you can still find them easily.

I tried a sample of HarkinDerm sunscreen from a visit to the Annapolis Boat Show.

It has the minerals mix that my Dermatologist recommenced. I found it easy to use and feel good on. I’m no scientist about this product but I use it.

Avoid sunburns. My sun enjoyed youth has me careful and managed care to avoid the further damage and skin cancers.

Give this issue the care and concern it deserves. Use sun screen.

Our youth activity will effect our life experiences above age 65.
