I have the Alerion Express 28 on my short list, but the boats within my price range are in the early 2000 vintage. AE 28's earlier than 2006 had a 9 HP one cylinder Yanmar. In 2006 they went to the 14 HP two cylinder.

I sail in an area with extreme tides creating rapid tidal flow. Not sure if the 9 HP would provide enough power to safely sail in this area, plus they went to the 14 HP for a reason. I'd guess this was because the boat was under powered.

Question: Has anyone repowered their one cylinder boat with the Yanmal two cylinder? If so, how difficult and expensive is the project?

Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,
I sail an older model Alerion 28 owner and have the GM 10 Yanmar, single cylinder diesel. I sail the great lakes so tide is not an issue here, but have been in some Chesapeake tides with the same model and it did fine. My engine does fine, it moves the boat at hull speed and is extremely stingy on fuel. I think one reason they might replaced the one cyl for two is that the one cal sounds like the African queen! Great boat, great motor.

Tom,

Thanks. I key to your answer is that it moves the boat at hull speed. If it does this it should be OK. We have three to four knot tides at the opening to our sound here in Georgia. If it is a six knot boat at least I can net two if I need to go directly up tide.

Appreciate the response!
Jim
