Looks like it could well be an Alden designed hull, especially as it was built by Halmatic. Could she have been completed by A. LeComte Co., of Jutphaas? They finished a number of Halmatic moulded Alden designs in the 1960's...

Further research reveals that Halmatic moulded a probably small production run of Alden designed 49ft loa motor sailer hulls finished by yards in England, Northern Ireland, and Holland, where Mass of Breskens launched at least two boats. Dimensions were 39ft lwl/ 49ft loa/ 13.25ft beam/ 5ft draft. The Lloyds Register of Yachts entry for the Northern Ireland built boat states that it was a centre board hull. The two Mass built boats listed in 1967 LRY had different engines; ‘Ulysse’, for G. Vynckier had a 94 hp Mercedes, while ‘Sea Master’ for Gabriél van Dreissche had a 96hp Penta. Sea Master’s sail number is listed as 331.Hope there might be some clues here for you to follow up? Iain

Hello Iain,

Thank you so much for your information, now I have a clue with which I can search further. I wander if Lloyds has more information about boats, if one give them the certificate number. By the way, have you ever seen photo's off a 49 f. motorsailer of Alden?

Regards, Frank

Not sure if you'll get much more out of Lloyds Register of Shipping archives Frank. My info comes from the annually published (until 1980) Lloyds Register of Yachts. I think the Halmatic "BOAT HULLS AND STRUCTURES LLOYD NR. 1576" may have been an "umbrella" number for all their production... but I'm not sure... must re-check the number on my hull.

I haven't seen photos of the vessels I mentioned, but the registered tonnage figure you gave seemed to fit with these boats.

Does Penelope fit the dimensions I mentioned?

It's always worth an enquiry to Niels Helleberg of Alden Designs via the contact page at http://www.aldendesigns.com/index.html . Niels always deals with such enquiries very pleasantly.

And presumably info on the output of Frans Mass is available in Holland?

Hi Iain,

Yess, Penelope fit the dimensions you mentioned. When I look at the Alden side, I see much resemblance with my boat
I will contact Niels Helleberg of Alden Designs and also Frans Maas, maybe they can help me futher. Thank you very much for your reactions.
