Alcohol Stove, what type of hose is compatable? Pipe thread question also

I have one of those pressurized alcohol stoves, 2 burner, it probably came in my C30. I received a stainless steel fire extinguisher yesterday, that I plan to use as a fuel tank for it. I bought a gal. of denatured alcohol from home depot.
I just need the hose that runs from the tank to the stove. The fire extinguisher has a hose on it already. It is 30 years old and probably needs replacing. I couldn't find a hose barb with a 3/8" straight thread, they only had tapered threads.

2 questions; can use a die on a tapered thread and make it a straight thread?

What hose is compatible with alcohol? It had a small piece on it that was plastic lined, do I need plastic lined hose?

Straight threads won't seal. NPT is what you need. Otherwise you need gaskets. They make hose marked "All Fuel". Get that . Probably at an auto supply store.

The threaded hole in the outlet of the fire extinguisher is straight thread. The part that screws in does have a rubber gasket. I was hoping to replace the part that screws in with a hose barb so I don't have to have two different types of hose.
I was impressed with the way this extinguisher was made. It's all stainless or brass with all orings replaceable. I guess that's how things were made in 1972.
I will check out the All Fuel hose.

Try to find an adaptor or just make one start with a bushing the will fit the present fire extinguisher and drill and tap for 1/4 or 1/8 inch IPS or braze a barb into the existing fitting.

That is probably the best course of action. That way I would be able to use the existing rubber gasket set up.
Do you use an alcohol stove Ross? Does your have an oven also, if you are using alcohol?

I don't think that there is a "good" hose for alcohol. Your best bet is to use copper tubing.

The 'fuel tank' will be in the aft locker in the cockpit. The stove is on a gimble in the galley. So the hose must be flexible.

I have propane.
Alcohol is sold in plastic bottles so reinforced clear poly hose should be alright.

auto parts store

you can get adapters at your local auto parts store that have sae(standard machine threads) on one side and npt(national pipe thread) on the other end. they come in all kinds of configs. male/male, male/female, female/female, etc.

Did a little looking around because this sounds like such a bad idea, coudn't find much fuel hose that was rated for even E85
Most "alcohol rated" fuel hose is only rated for E10.
Cars with fuel systems rated for E85 use special plastic flex lines and stainless components because the alcohol dissolves or corrodes most anything else.
What happened to the original fuel tank and lines?
Kludging together components for a fuel system on a boat would keep me awake at night. My 2cts. Tim

Search for teflon tubing or silicone tubing, epecially for laboratory peristaltic pumps. They are flexible, good for low pressure use and solvent resistant. Use the proper SS compression type fittings like Swagelok with ferrules and inserts.

I am looking at a CAL 29 right now with a 1 gallon alcohol presure tank going to a gimbled two burner stove/oven

It has a rubber hose of some type that lasted 40 years and while i would sure be getting a new hose its clear there is something that will work safely :)

I used braided fuel line, I liked the fact that the hose was protected as it runs from the lazerette to the stove. Been in for 2 years, no problems.

I bought enough fuel line to reach the aft lazzaret. I cleaned up the stove and installed it. I bought a SS fire extinguisher, found a hose barb fitting at the outlet, filled it up with 2 gallons of alcohol($30) and the alcohol ate the plastic dip tube. So there is $30 wasted and I have to make a copper dip tube before I can even try it out.
At a hose makers shop, I saw in their book that you can use almost any kind of hose for denatured alcohol, apparently it's not that caustic. But the plastic in my 1972 extinguisher apparently was not on the long list of alternatives.

Hermit the next time you are at the welding supply shop ask about Blockade copper brazing alloy. Better than phos copper and much better than soft solder

Ross-you recommended all fuel line. I couldn't find that anywhere.
I have never brazed anything before. I have oxy-acetalene and all the stuff to do it, I just never have. I was hoping to make a dip tube with out brazing anything.

Hermit, Brazing is very similar to soft soldering but with alloys that melt at higher temps and are in the 35,000 to 45,000 psi strength class. Do be afraid of learning it. You will find a whole new world opening to you. Google All Fuel hose you will get several hit , Goodyear, Trident and others.

Hermit this picture is for you. Just an example of what can be done with brazing. Steel nut and copper pipe.

That is impressive. I may end up soldering the pieces together. I didn't make it to the harware store today to see if I could just thread it all together.
Chatting with a lady from west marine, she told me that she could get a magma propane grill for $69, but it's last years model. So I ordered that. I never thought I would order anything from west but sometimes they have good sales.
We will have alcohol in the boat and propane off the rail. I guess I need to make a propane locker.
BTW, this grill looks like it's set up for the small bottles. How do I convert it to the large tanks?

They make adaptors.
The brazing alloy is called blockade by Harris needs a silver soldering flux but it is a charm to use. Look to the welding supply shop.
