Has anyone tried regular 91% rubbing alcohol in the Origo stove? At $1.40 per quart its a lot cheaper than the $5.00 per quart alcohol at West Marine. Some rubbing alcohol is only 70% ( the rest of it is water) but I don't think it would burn as well. I tried the 91% this last weekend and it works fine. I did find a little light soot on the bottom of the pot used to boil the vegetables. Any advice?

Generic Denatured

Shaun, I don't know about the rubbing alcohol. I buy denatured alcohol at WalMart or Lowes, found usually in the paint section. It works perfectly in my Origo and is a lot cheaper than "marine" brands. Dick

Cheap Alcohol?

Shaun, the smokeless version we use from West Marine costs ?? per gallon, but we use -at most, one a month and the galley area stays clean and odor-free. So, for a month's worth, you have to ask yourself if it is worth it. Not for us. Good sailing....RD

Alcohol?

I just picked up a used Origo 3000. I tried it out in the kitchen, using a bit of denatured alcohol straight from the paint department. When I lit it it stunk up the entire house. To put it mildly my wife was not pleased! I've never experienced this with a pressurized alcohol stove (Kenyon, Homestrand) using the same fuel. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas about what I can do to make this thing livable? The Origo certainly seems easier to light than the Kenyon!

Denatured

I used an Origo for 4 years and always used denatured alcohol from the paint dept. Never had a problem. There is a normal odor from it, but nothing as obtrusive as the previous post indicated.

Also use Methyl Hydrate

I use methyl hydrate in my Oringo and it works fine with no smells what so ever. I purchase it at the local hardware store in the paint department. Although I am not positive, I believe that this may be the same as what other posts refer to as denatured alcohol. Even the label on the bottle indicates that it is suitable for our stoves. Much cheaper and easier to get!
