Dear Steve and Vega owners,

I'm an Italian doctor, originally from Venice, but
living and working around Africa for the last 5 years.
In Italy I used to sail in friends' boats (Alpa 34,
Vertue, etc) and since then I have been dreaming about
owning my own boat. I use my free time to read
everything about sailing, to be ready to buy a second
hand boat when I'll go back to Europe (possibly in 1
or 2 years). Eventually I decided to look for an Albin
Vega (thanks to the UK web site and John Vigor's
book). Now, in view of the purchase, I'm considering
all the alternatives and upgrading possibilities for
this boat (engine, interiors, etc), with the idea of
sailing her around the Mediterranean sea with my wife.

I have some questions for which you may already have
an answer:
-Consumption of the Beta BZ482.
-How to increase the fuel tank capacity. Apart from
jerry cans that bear the risk of minor spill and
diesel smell in the cockpit lockers, is it possible to
add an extra tank, connected with the original one?
-Vega extra equipment: it is mentioned in the original
brochure (Vega Handbook) about a list of "optionals"
like book shelf, crockery's locker, canvas lee boards
for the saloon berths. Are there copies of these
original optionals available? Are there drawings to
custom make them?
-Dinghy: which dinghy would you suggest for the Vega,
considering inside storage during long trips and deck
storage for short movements?
-Shower in the cockpit: is there a standard shower
system adaptable to the cockpit?
-Is there a complete cockpit tent, to connect to the
sprayhood and close completely the cockpit?
-Bimini: is there any bimini specifically designed for
the Vega?

Thanks for the assistance and the interesting web
site!
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and happy New Year,

Marco Baldan

Dear Doctor Baldan:

You state you are interested in purchasing a Vega.

Ours is a Series III Vega which is documented as SV "Discovery' with the US Coast Guard. She is Vega #3228. She has Harken Roller furling, a lightly usaed cruising genoa with a Cadet Grey UV sail cover with luff foam which makes it possible to reef the head sail. There is not a single blister on her hull and the original gel coat is almost flawless after having been matched and touched up by a master craftsman, Discovery has the Selden boom and mast, VHF, Combi Depth Instrumentation, Loran. Her Volvo MD 7A starts on the first click and purrs like a kitten. This boat was out if the water in storage for some time by a past owner and has been lightly and carefully used. She is in great shape stem to stern with new Hella running lights on the bow pulpit. I love this boat and it shows. She is very clean and everything works and is in good order.

I am contemplating making an offer on a larger boat as my wife and I are nearing retirement and interior room for cruising with our now two grown children would be luxuries we would really enjoy. The Vega is perfect for the two of us as a summer cottage at our favorite mooring summers. We are located in NY.

The only cosmetic thing (which is deferred mainatenance I failed to get to this fall) is I need to do is to refinish the cockpit hatches and teak hand rails and have some stitching in the sprayshield (dodger in the US) redone where a thread pulled. Our main sail (with a one year old Cadet Grey sail cover) has plenty of life left, but since we were planning on doing some sailing longer distances this summer, I have ordered and paid for a fine new coastal mainsail from the Rolly Tasker loft. It should be delivered by May.

I am not sure our Vega is yet for sale as I would need my bid accepted on the larger boat and have it pass survey and appraisal. If my offer is accepted on the new boat, I would be interested in selling our Vega for apprx. EURO 12,500 or $16,500 US. Our Vega is currently insured for approximately that value.

Note this is NOT AN OFFER TO SELL as we have not yet acquired a larger boat to replace our Vega.

If you or anyone out here in Vega country is interested I will let you know. On three or four occasions, we have had European people come by who were visiting a university nearby our boat to ask us if we were interested in selling our Vega.

Stay tuned. Good luck in your search Doctor, For a young couple, a Vega is as fine a "pocket cruiser" as money can buy in this price range.........Cheers....Jim

Dear Marco,
My Albin Vega is for sail. I have owned her for the past
6 years and in that time I have explored Zeeland in Holland. It is
only due to a change in my personal circumstances that I have to
sell and whilst the asking price is 12000 Euro I will consider an
offer. She is currently for sale through a broker for which I have
provided the link below. If you have any questions then please call
me
+31(0)492 535992.

Kind regards,

Martin Chaplin.
