The Fuel gauge is located on the fuel line plate at the top of the tank. If you remove the plate screws and carefully lift it straight up you can check it out.
At this time I removed all the diesel from the tank and used this access hole to polish clean the interior of the tank. There was som scale and black crud. Used a wood dowel with a mechanics rag to completly wipe it down sanitary.

Here is the photo link to look at the photos of the gauge system vega used. Just copy the link and paste it to your browser. Gauge Slideshow by Bruce Blumenstein

When I fill the tank I remove the valve cap and moniter the rod as it rises up with the fuel level.
Not sure how much more? Gently pull the rod up until it stops and measure the difference. You can figure out all this stuff.

Sure makes it nice to have this gauge working ! I posted this to files also. -Bruce

With my half-vast experience (one fill-up) I discovered that fuel can
escape thru the floating dipstick hole. Be ready with a rag or paper towel.

Alan,

That has happened to me also. I marked the rod at increments so I could tell how much is in the fuel tank (+-) a little.
I haven't overfilled since. Fills fast near the top-out, where the tank shape is smaller. I stop filling 2 gal. down and put the cap back on....then add the last short 2 gallons. The dipstick comes in handy after iron sailing off and on over a few months and you haven't a clue how much is gone.

I have a small little oil removal hand pump with a retraction hose down the exterior side of the fuel tank into the depths of the keel. I keep it there in place under the floor board permanently.
You can suck up about a quart of bilge water that your main bilge pump can never get up. Anything lighter than water this little guy takes care of. I always pump into a quart plastic bottle for that task.
I use a five gallon bucket for the main bilge pump. The out line pulls off the stern joint so I can direct the keel water into the container and put a lid on it. I take all my bilge water to the county recycle. Only in a real dire emergency would I ever pump directly into the water as there is always going to color an ugly slick even if you have no fuel aboard. Believe me. I keep an oil absorption cloth laid beneath the engine block too. -Bruce

My main (and so-far only) bilge pump just dumps it's output into the
cockpit relying on the cockpit drains. I don't know if I want to do
anything about that or not.

I have a clean poly fuel tank from a series 2 Vega available free to anyone who wants it. I can't use it and it takes up room in the shop, but I just can't bring myself to toss it. Craig

Craig I will buy the tank. Tell me what you need to get for it and I
will send you a check for it and shipping. I am On the east coast but I
would think it could come UPS. If you will e-mail me personally we can
talk about it off list as there will be personal information involved.
My e-mail address is: dougpol1@... Thanks, Doug

Doug, I don't need anything for it. I'm glad someone can use it. It appears that if I try to send to your e-mail address through the list my message will be post to the list anyway. Yahoo seems to truncate your address and redirect the E-mail to the list, or perhaps I just don't know what I'm doing. Perhaps this will work. E-mail me at craig w hirt @ yahoo . com but eliminate the spaces, and we will get it done.

Craig, Is Tern a series 1 or a series 2? I was going to install a series 2 tank in Lyric (series 1). It wouldn't fit. Tank was wider than the bilge. Walt

Hi

Series I (Petrol Vega) had a cylindrical tank in the starboard locker.
Series II had the plastic keel. Very late Series II and Series III had a
stainless tank in the port locker.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I have a series II built in 1974 so the tank should fit. The big if,
seems to be will UPS haul it. I kind of doubt they will. The fellow I
bought the boat from changed the tank. Put a big one in the port locker,
and threw away the keel tank. He also took the windvane of and sold it
for $25.00. Oh well I can remember when I was young and foolish. I
have done worse.:) Doug
