I recently tried to buy a spare voltage regulator for my 1969
Vega OS 21 engine; the price from Bosch was $540 ! This high price is probably
due to the fact that the engine uses a starter/generator, a rare bird these
days, and there is very little demand for suitable regulators., and consequently
few choices.
It appears that the functions of the requlator could be
divided into two parts, and accomplished at much less cost; voltage regulation
in the generating mode using a VW Bug regulator, and starting, using one or two
small solenoids. Has anyone done anything like this, or know how it could be
done?
