On my recently purchased 85 H31 (2GMF engine) the alarm buzzer on the engine instrument panel (B type, large one) does not seem to be working. I was wandering if it suppose to buzz every time the ignition key is turned on and the engine does not run (makes sense) or only as a sign of trouble (high water temperature, low oil pressure or no charge) ???

ignition panel blues

I too have the 2GMF and have found that the engine panel has always been a bit ...unpredictable. The whistle should go on when you turn the key right to the 1st detent. Then I push the ignition button which usually does kick over that great little engine. However there are times when I turn the key, push in the start button.........and nothing. While disconcerting I've always been able to get it kicked over by removing the key and retry. Maybe it tok a time or two with a little jiggling. I suspect the spring loaded "tumblers" on the lock are in need of some lube. Anybody else got an idea/solution? J. McCue s/v "Safeharbor"

Alarm tbl.

The alarm as well as a warning light should come on,with eng off and key on. Use a jumper and ground the sending units one at a time with key on for a test. also make sure previous owner didnt put a cutoff switch in horn ckt. Good luck red

groundless accusations

had the same problem with my 310. Turned out that there was an intermittant ground on the main ground buss panel. On the 310 it's located beind the battery switch. on your boat? There was a loose nut on the main battery ground, which gave exactly the same symptoms you report. Adding a lockwasher and tightening fixed it. This is a nast problem as a bad main ground could result in blowing out the alternator diodes.

Previous owner modifications?

Thanks for the useful info. I went out to the boat and recorded the existing situation with key on/engine off: charge=on, oil=off, temp=off, buzzer=off with test switch in up position (same switch that turn on tachometer light): charge=on, oil=on, temp=on, buzzer=on This is not according to the manual, and does not make sense (since at the turn of the key there is no oil pressure and no charge which should set the alarm). Looks like someone modified it. At least I know the lamps and buzzer are working, just need to verify they work when they should. It looks like another weekend of fun ....appreciate any comments.
