Hey folks,

I have discovered I have AIS unit, wondering if anything special needs to be done about this. Like when I turn on my radio it transmits AIS?
Do I need to register a new number with a new owner etc etc?

any insights?

I have discovered I have AIS unit
That can mean several things.
There are two basic types on pleasure boats.
  1. Receive only. This, when turned on will display the other boats signal. Think of it like an AM radio. It plays the music being broadcast by other boats. This often is part of a VHF radio. It will project the location of AIS transmissions on a screen attached to the radio and sometimes to a chart plotter.
  2. Transmit/Receive. This is identified as a class B transceiver. It tells other boats where and who you are. In order to legally operate this type you need to get an identification number and code in your information. This type also receives the AIS signal of other boats and will display the information on a screen or your chart plotter.

thanks for the quick responses, I do not have a manual will drive down to the boat tomorrow, and take some extra pictures. Its a black box connected to radio, not sure about the plotter.

If it is an AIS transeiver as described by @jssailem you must update your contact information.
Given that you live in Canada, you simple go to this website and make the necessary changes with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) - Spectrum Management and Operations Branch.
ISED Modify an Existing MMSI - Form AB
And yes there is no cost to you.
