Updated the VHF in our 2005 38 with a standard horizon 2150 vhf. AIS receive only capability. Radio is in, works fine - problem is connecting the AIS system to the existing raymarine system - original issue C80 chartplotter. Has anyone done this and if so, could you shed some light on the process - grave detail would be appreciated! I did look at the manual for the VHF and tried some combinations, all to no avail. So, looking for what colors where, baud rate (manual leads you to believe that the vhf should be at 4800) and whether I need to change the rate in the chartplotter. Thanks

I installed recently an AIS on my boat. Previously installed I have an ICOM 402 with DSC, a C70 with the GPS 125 sensor. To provide the VHF with position for DSC, i took the signal from the C70 NMEA0183 out and passed to the VHF. at 4800 setting on the C70, the VHF displayed "GPS" and it worked normally.
When I installed the AIS, I connected it to the C70 via its NMEA0183 in, and it did not show on the C70. In order for the C70 to see AIS info, you have to change the nmea setting to the 13400. at this setting, the VHF does not see the position from the C70 NMEA. I could verify this by looking at the small "GPS" on the VHF disappear or reappear by changing the NMEA speed setting on the C70.

I need to provide the VHF with a Nmea position other than from the C70 if I want to use the C70 to see the AIS info. I have to run a wire with NMEA0183 from the Seatalk /Nmea converter to the VHF, and not use the C70 NMEA out.

I believe you may have a similar issue, for the VHF to see a position for DSC it is on 4800, for the C80 to see AIS it is the 13400.

Hope it is not too confusing...

Marco,
Thanks for the info - not too confusing and seems pretty logical. I'll give it a try this weekend.
