Hi all, Appreciate any assistance. Aircon issue on Hunter 33 2004 although I suspect same unit used in most similar age models. Noticed only fan operating, not cooling, no discharge overboard. Traced incoming line from sea cock strainer to pump under floor in saloon outside head. Suspect pump not operating. Has anyone had same issue?

Things to look for if you have not already.....

Did you open the raw water sea cock on the intake? Is the above the water line discharge seacock open? Is the pump running before breaker trips? If jess, then is the strainer full? Next check for an air lock. Bleed the system. Another idea I have used to unblock a blockage in the line is to use the water hose at the discharge force water back thru the system. Sometimes I have left everything connected and it cleared the a blockage at the raw water intake and sometimes I have had to disconnect the pump or strainer to flush out a blockage.
What type of pump is it ? In the impeller in the pump head good.
Go step by step. Most times though its an air lock and the pump can not prime its self.
I have a tee valve just after pump on all my a/c unit just for such purpose. I have three units and most times do not loose prime after being out for a sail, but if there is a problem its usually the forward a/c unit because its thru hull pickup is about 20' away.
BTW....... As far as Raw water pumps go never under size always go with the most powerful pump you can afford ..... It as also been my experience that the little giant saltwater pumps are the best and most reliable. My original little giant pump that came with my boat about 12 years ago as been trouble free with almost no maintenance. Original pump head and impeller. And will still suck the chrome off a Buick I always like to say. While the original pumps that came with my other a/c units all died within the first 8 to 10 months. That goes for the little red teel pump from mermaid and all the red the marsh pumps submersible water cooled or otherwise.
I replaced them with little giants years ago and have not looked back..... I found the best prices can be found online at most salt water aquarium stores sometimes you can even make a score on ebay.

The pumps that most A/C manufacturers supplied are junk and should be replaced. See archives for many previous discussions about these pumps and better manufacturer choices for replacement.

I definitely don't recommend a pump from March. I went through three March a/c pumps in three years. I'm using an Iwaki now, and so far I really like it. It's smaller, quieter, and pumps a lot of water. Just need to see how durable it turns out to be (looking around for a board to knock on...).

onecoolair - what model and flow rate little giant pump did you intall and what btu is your AC? I'd like to replace the pump on my unit (or at least have one line up to get if mine fails) and there seem to be alot of little giant pumps available. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have three units a 16500btu and then two 5200btu units...
In the past Marine depot was one of my sources and another time I found one on ebay...... The original pump I believe is a 4-something?... it came original on boat 12 years ago. Here are couple pictures of what my pumps look like. I have included a few links so you can shop around and pick out the best deal for you. I do not know if the SBO store here carries them here, but you can check and see. Try to go with at least a 3-m????.. Breaking news...Just checked an old email correspondence from quite awhile back with Marine Depot and this is one of the models I bought from them LG2145 LITTLE GIANT - 4-MDQX-SC INLINE PUMP 1 $216.99
Shipping: $1.05
Subtotal: $216.99
Tax: $0.00
Grand Total: $218.04LG2145 LITTLE GIANT - 4-MDQX-SC INLINE PUMP..... I think the 4 series is a better choice. Just make sure its a 120 volt model. They are very popular for salt water aquariums and designed to run 24/7 ....
The models I have are not rated to be submersible.... But I have not had a problem. I did have an incident last year were I was in the back of the boat flushing and cleaning while letting the hose run water to the bilge. I happened to climb out of the rear lazzerette and ran down below to get something and noticed soap bubbles coming out of the bilge boards figure holes. All three pumps were 1/2 submerged and still running the pump motors air cooling fans were blowing soap bubbles. I flipped the breakers right away and then I gave the main bilge pump an ass whooping...:cussing:... Once bilge was emptied they started right back up like nothing ever happened....... Only one pump is showing any signs of rust on its casing and its the newest one with the external capacitor .
Best of luck in your decision.
