I recently purchased a 1978 hunter 30. I was wondering if anyone knew of a company that makes air mattresses that fit into the forward cabin.

Why do you want an Air Mattress?
Richard: Just curious why you want an Air Mattress. I doubt that anyone makes anything in that shape. One of the better materials for a mattress is Latex Rubber. This is not foam but real rubber. They are not cheap but offer some real advantages. First they are very supportive and the rubber will not mold like foam. The next option is to just get new foam cushions like the original.

Various Grades
There are various grades and densities of foam, go to a local fabric store or professional who does re upholstry, they can advise what is available, choose one that is comfortable for you. We did this for our sleeping area years ago, chose mattress ticking as a cover material and is very comfortable for us. The shop said it will outlast the boat!! Good luck.

Latex Rubber
Yahoo came up with a bunch of interesting links when I put 'latex rubber' in its' search engine. Did find a couple of useful links for mattresses. Why do you say latex will mold like foam? Also do you have any links for 'raw' latex material? Most sites I found want to sell covered mattresses. I did find one in SF that sell custom shaped for boats.

You don't want pure latex foam mattress - it will be too hard. Get latex with some other type of foam as a 2 or 3 inch top layer. You will be much happier. Latex does last decades.

Try "egg crate foam"
I cut a piece of 'egg crate foam' from a dept store over the berth cushions and that did the trick. Also you could try www.tufftedtopper.com. Expensive but they will make any size for one price.

A custom mattress is worth every penny
BoatUS offers a great custom made mattress. We purchased ours last year and swear buy it. We actually visited the factory in NJ to see the quality and for the price it's the only way to go. Sleep is important for long cruises or just a weekend.

Mike: The fact is that Latex Foam will NOT attract Mold & Mildew. They are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They make this rubber in different densities. So you can get it softer or more firm depending on your preferences. Regarding Debra's comments. She makes a good point. Our boats have no box spring under them. They are on a rigid platform, so a softer foam may be a good idea (depending on what you like. Remember "Calling a saiboat transportation is like calling sex reproduction." (modified Porsche advertisement)
