Air in the Compass

When I last went to the boat I saw a big air bubble at the top of the compass. Frankly, I don't remember if it was there before I put the boat away for the winter. Is there a method of replacing the liquid in the compass myself or do I have to send it away to a compass repair place? If it is serviceable by me where can I get the instructions? Thanks for your help.

I would recommend going to this Web site: http://www.andrewscompass.com/. They have a nice article about the problem you have, Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

BUBBLES?

I have had a similar problem with my Ritchie SP5 compass and found a small machine screw on the bottom of the compass( you must remove compass from pedestal) I turned the compass upside down with the machine screw pointing straight up(it's off center) remove the screw and filled it with odorless mineral spirits(available from Ritchie or hardware stores). Reinstalled screw and turned right side up. If you still have air, try again as you did not have the machine screw straight up. I have seen other compasses that did not have the filler screw and i believe they are not repairable.
