air in plumbing system

Hi Peggie; I am not getting anything close to full water pressure in the head sink faucet. The galley taps and aft stern shower are normal. I get a weak, constant water flow from the tap. but the pump keeps shunting off and on without getting the pressure up so that the pump stays on when the tap is on. I just replaced the Grohe cartridges, as the tap was dripping last fall. On another water subject, I replaced my Rule 1000 bilge pump, as the old one siezed when I was testing it. It is the identical model and wired the same way. The pump pushes out a little water, but most of it comes back in through the joint in the pump where the two parts meet. The bilge hose is clear. The check valve seems normal. It seems as though there should be a gasket, an o-ring, or something to prevent this, but nothing was on either the old or new pump. Ideas please, Ron

Doesn't sound like air in the line

It sounds like the diaphragm in the pump may be failing. If the head sink is the furthest from the pump, it may not be noticeable in the galley yet that the diaphragm is losing pressure. As for your bilge pump...it's working the way it's supposed to. All bilge pump discharge lines should have a loop in 'em that's well above the waterline...without it, you risk taking on water. So any water in the line between the pump and the top of that loop is gonna run back down into the bilge when the pump shuts off. Too many people today don't think they have to do any manual labor to keep the bilge dry...so they install check valves in the line to prevent it. BAD idea! 'Cuz bilge water is full of glop, oil, debris that can cause a check valve to stick or fail, preventing the bilge pump from sending any water overboard...a good way to sink a boat! The right solution: at the end of the weekend, use a manual dinghy bailer, sponge and bucket or a wet/dry vac to remove the gallon or so of water the bilge pump leaves behind.

thanks Peggie

The previous owner must have installed the check valve. You make an excellent point about the thing plugging. The water pump makes enough pressure for the stern shower to work just fine. I will keep watch on it the head sink faucet a little longer.

Loose fitting on the intake side

combined with a lot of aluminum salt plugging the outlet of the water tank. That is what happened to mine. Low flow and the pump would run constantly. The loose fitting on the intake side leaked air and the pump would not reach shutoff pressure. The pump itself was fine. You might try a different water source for diagnostic purposes.
