New owner for 1997 Hunter Passage. Problem I am having is when I am out in rough weather and need to drop sail to enter a harbor. I start the diesel and proceed to drop sails. Furred jib and start dropping main when engine cuts out. Engine runs me out of slip fine but this is the:confused: second time engine has cut out in bad weather. Could this be a problem in the tank pickup or a sign of an air leak in the fuel line?

Sounds like bad weather is mixing up crud in fuel tank blocking pick up tube or fouling filter. If If you have a screen at bottom of fuel pick and if you can remove it. Check fuel filter and change if necessary. Happy Sailing

If it was air you would need to bleed the fuel system both high and low pressure sides before it would start. Agree with Loco - sounds like crud in the fuel blocking the pickup tube screen.

What motor do you have?

I would check that pickup tube first! If you have a Yanmar JH they are self bleeding but you could also have some sort of an air leak.

What was the fuel level in your tank? After having a similar situation, I have never allowed my fuel tank go below 1/2. Never had a problem again. My motto: "KISS - keep it simple stupid." If that doens't work, go sequentially for the more complex.
