While picking up a part at my local Yanmar dealer, I bought a new air filter too. When I opened the air breather, the old foam filter was gone! Nothing was left but it's steel skeleton. I know the last time I cleaned the filter the foam part was intact. I guess the motor sucked it up and spit it out while never missing a beat! Bob

Was The Filter Dry?

My guess is the filter was still damp after being cleaned and the engine was started before the filter dried and there was too much resistance for the air to go through the filter. ?

It can happen!

I attended a Yanmar general maintenance class in Toronto a few years ago. One of the items they stressed was for us NOT to install an air filter. It seems that the foam will disintegrate in time and be sucked up into the engine where it can do untold amounts of damage. Unlike an engine on a car or truck, the air that is being used by the engine in a sailboat is very clean, so it is OK to skip the air filter. I suppose that those folks that MUST go by the book and install a new air filter should do so every year without fail. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Yanmar Air Filter

My filter vanished also. I think as mentioned eariler, you don't need one. I replaced mine but it's the last time. I had about 1400 hrs. on it.

Replace my air filter for noise abatement

On my hunter 34 the foam was also gone. Replaced it just to block some of the engine noise.. along with more engine padding.

mine too!

When I bought my 33.5 w/ 2GM20F I checked the air filter and....nothing. Either the previous owner removed it, or the 2GM20 ate it. Or maybe its with the socks that dissappear in the washing machine.
