I am looking to puchase a outboard motor for a new tender (inflatable 9' Avon). I have discovered via the internet two air cooled models. One by Tanaka motors and the other under the name Cruise-n-Carry. Does any body have any direct experiences with these motors? At 17 to 24 lbs. for a 2.7hp or 3 hp motor it looks like something to check into. Thanks. Sean

Crummy little engines

Sean: These little engines are not very good quality. They are under powered for you dink and are basically throw away when they need repair. VERY noisy, puts you in the same class as PWC. We had one several years ago and it got WET when we beached our dingy. The cool water caused it to sieze. They are better than nothing but would by my LAST choice. This is just my opinion.

Listen to Steve

My brother tried to get away cheap, also and bought a Tanaka. It was so noisy and cheap, he took it back and got his money back.

Keep it simple

We have a Nissan 3.5 2 cycle water cooled. It is my understanding that the Nissan, Tuhatsu & Mercury etc..are all the same anyway. This thing has been sent to the bottom of the harbor in salt water three times, been exposed to the salt environment 6 seasons, not excactly handled with kid gloves and it still starts on no more than the second pull. I was not easily swayed from the Johnson/Evinrude products but these little motors real simple in design and easy to work on. They are pricy, but I belive at this point it has paid for it's self.

Cruise n' Carry

I've had one for about 10 years; no maintainance; always starts. I've no idea about repairs since its never broken. Mine is the 1.5HP 12lb model. The big advantage is being able to hand it down to the dink. Its VERY loud. For more than ocassional use it would probably drive me nuts. CnC is out of business.

Smart move.

Think about a 4 cycle. Honda and Yamaha have made 4 stroke engines for years. Put a want ad on the site, maybe someone can help you out.

Consider a new engine if you can

I agree for the discussion and really like my Mercanissahatsu 3.3, but would caution you that these little engines are really senstive to the way in which they were broken in. I would try to get new and break it in carefully. It will develop a lot more power and be easier to start that way. Justin - O'day Owner's Web

Mercunissahatsu?

Wow, that's a mouthful... I agree with Justin (and everyone else) that these are great little engines, though- I have 2 that have served me very well after MUCH hard use and abuse. One is a Nissan 5HP long shaft, circa 1986, and it still starts on the second or third pull... I've had a LOT of work done to it in the last year, but the previous 12 years saw LOTS of neglect for that motor- from me and the previous owners. I was amazed it ran when I bought it (came with my 23), but it has been a real champ right up 'til this season. Last season saw a water pump failure, which led to other problems... This season it's carburetor problems (only runs right with the choke half out!) but for a 14-year-old outboard that has been verily abused, I'm quite happy! I also have a Tohatsu 3.5 (Similar to the one that was 'dropped to the bottom of the bay' in a previous post), about 6 years old. VERY reliable motor, as long as it gets Premium Grade fuel (92 octane or better) from a good source. Mine seems a little over-sensitive to dirty fuel, but if that's the worst of its demands, I'll gladly pay for good gas! My only gripe with the Mercunissahatsu series is finding a mechanic- There's exactly one mechanic in Key West who is certified for them, and can get OEM parts, and he doesn't come cheap... --Jon Bastien H23/H25

Ditto on Mer/Nissan 3.5

Mine was in Biscayne bay for 3 days last year. Cleaned it out and it has run fine.
