First post. So... glad to find a users site. I'm the Admiral. Period. I have got to have air conditioning here in South Carolina. We (the captain) and I put the boat in ICW in April and stay until it get cold. Trouble is, July and August are unbearable!! We have a nice bimini and do up a boom tent idea to keep everything dry and shady when necessary.... but still 98 degrees in full sun is too much for this 60+ year old admiral and her almost 70 yr old captain. We are about to sink lotsa money in a carry on, though it is not much better then the "portable room AC" we tried last year. HELP....

Forward hatch

I've seen some posts about room air conditioners in the main hatch but it looks as if it would be hard to step over if you needed to get out. Does anyone have a good setup for a room air conditioner in the forward hatch?

Interesting but convienience seems lacking..

How do you easily get in an out when you need to. Is it effiecient. It must be heavy to move around/

Some options on the internet....

Depending on how long you will be away from the pier (110 AC) .... Maybe some combination... http://www.boatersworld.com/product/358400257.htm http://www.swampy.net/m300.html http://www.kooleraire.com/order%20page.htm

portable a/c

I also have a companion way 5000 btu A/C... simple, but the drain leaks into the cockpit.. I tried to make it work w/ the pop top up, but the canvas cover leaks too much, for anything but night use. note a honda 2000, will run the ac/ (tested on the patio), and will test it on the boat sometime this summer... (I have a co2 detector, that I hope works!) -this might be a better idea, if you plan to plug in to 110v supply. (you only need to route a 4" dryer duct type hose out of the boat...), getting in and out would be a lot easier. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100530545&N=10000003+90401+503405 (note there is no drain on this model) -oh, those cooler type a/c's looked interesting, but got poor reviews, IIRC... better to get a good fan. imho

Evaporative coolers

Evap coolers only are effective in low humidity. In Arizona they work well for all but about 2-1/2 months of the year. But they have water, usually in the bottom, which is pumped up to run through a material that air is also drawn across. This adds lots of moisture to the air. Also, if you heel at all, the water will dump all over. Stick with a true ac if you must have one.

Hot nights on the boat

Hello I have modified a mid 60's hump mount automotive evaporative cooler to make the nights a "bit" more pleasant for sleeping on our Mac 26d. I will second the statement about evaporative coolers...they just barely work. If you need airconditioning and have an AC power source, go with the Cruiseaire. You can find them on E-bay for about half retail price...but they do make the boat a bit bow heavy.. Sail the California coast during the summer...it's quite pleasant. Marty MsSugas Mac 26d

Cruiseaire - storage

its been a while, but I sailed on a tripp 33 that had the Cruiseaire... it worked fair on that large boat, but was used mainly for mold mitigation than for cool. -IIRC, the unit is not flat on the bottom, the exaust sticks out. not too bad in the dock box, but storage in the V berth when sailing might hurt the unit... http://www.cruisair.com/sheets/L-0860.pdf

I had a Cruisair too

It was on my old 30' boat and it kept the cabin cool at night on the Gulf Coast. Not so much during the day, but the hull was blue and noticeably hotter than if it had been white. It lasted for years with no trouble. It was heavy took up space in the v berth but so would any ac. I'd get one again but I don't want to spend that much money, even for a used one on emay.

Broke down, bought the bank

Well, I broke down and let my Captain buy the Cruisair 7000BTU Carryon AC. I can't imagine moving it around too often, but noway can it stay on the hatch when sailing. I am holding my true reaction until I see it in use. The portable room ac we had sat behind the steps and a dryer venter run up to just below the companionway. Main problem was that it pulls hot humid air from the boat interior, just sucking extra hot air from the around the closed companionway. In SC I bet we could distill the water from the air and provide water to the world!!! The unit itself got hot and added to our discomfort. I sure hope this works, otherwise I'll be forced to trade up to a bigger boat. Thanks for all your replies.

Please post your feelings after you have tried it awhile. Enquiring minds want to know how it works and any problems that it causes. ;-)

The only time I see ice on Galveston Bay

is when I throw my old drink overboard. Walt, how do you sail on that lake - do you fit skis on the bottom?
