Does anyone have information as to how to build, into the companioway, a window type air conditioner. I understand that it's possible to do this, but I need some plans or photo help. I know you will have to step over it to get below, but so what, it would be worth it just to get cool!

Boards

I just cut a piece of marine ply to fit the board holders and then cut a hole in the ply for the window unit.

Been There, Done That

Modified a wooden hatch cover ( hole cutout ) with store purchased A/C bracket kit to hold small air conditioner. Unit could slide in and out allowing better entry and exit thru companionway. It worked but was somewhat in the way. A/C unit drained into cockpit ( set unit lower in back ). We also added a hatch unit which worked well with addition of a sun cover over boom. These self engineered methods caused us to finally arrive with A/C installed in our present sailboat! Alas, exhaust air from unit compressor will heat your cockpit area. Stay Cool!

It's pretty easy

I used my bottom hatch board for a pattern on a piece of marine plywood. I duplicated the original including cutting the bevel on the edge that matches with the top hatch board. I got a used 6000 btu window air conditioner for about $40 measured the the outside dimensions and made a cutout in the new bottom hatch board. When it is set in place, the power cord reaches the 110 outlet outside the head door and the upper hatch board fits into place (and locks). The unit is stable enough to leave in place while sailing which is a real advantage over the portable hatch models. Your right about having to step over it to get in and out of the cabin but it's no big deal.
