Hi Will. No advice here regarding location, but what type do you have in mind? Our boat has MarineAire reverse cycle heat pumps that use sea water to heat/cool the boat. Expensive, but very efficient. If you're looking for a regular portable air conditioner several models to choose from. It would help if you provide a bit more detail as to the type or style you want. There are some that operate on 12V DC, which helps while on the hook someplace and still keep the boat cooler than the outside temps. Either way, electricity demand for such a device to operate factors into which type you select.

I should have been a little more clear. Looking at a fixed mount system, probably a Dometic 10,000 BTU. I have a spare thru hull in my rear cabin. When I bought it last year, the prior owner mentioned to the broker the thru hull was for a previously installed AC. But, I don't see any evidence of where one was installed nor any evidence of duct work or thermostat.

I installed one in my old 30T years ago.
I put the uniit in the back berth. The berth is verry long so the unit went in the deepest area. I then made a cabinet across the back to enclose the unit. The ducts went through the adjacent head and under the nav station.
Some install it under the nav station but I didn't like that option. Not sure it fit there anyway.

That's one of my ideas due to the proximity to a thru hull. When you ran the ducts through the head, did you route them under the sink area so they would be out of sight? I was also thinking it might be possible (plan to measure this weekend) to mount the unit in the head in the storage area beside the sink or even under the sink.

Hi Will, our boat has a Little Giant pump that feeds sea water to the heat pump (I'm assuming you're getting a heat pump). Both operate on 120V AC. The system discharges water through an above-the-waterline dedicated through hull without the need for a sea cock valve.

yes, ran the lines under the sink.

The shorter the duct the more efficient, add a small fan to circulate the air around the cabin. Also, the ac intake is important as it sucks in warm air so should come from the cabin as well, this is like the max ac setting in your car.
