Hi, Our air conditioner unit in the fwd cabin has started to give a smell of ammonia/pee. I have emptied the drip tray and scrubbed it and used disinfectant and simply green on it. This seemed to help for a couple of hours, however, the smell returned. The intake vents are clean. The smell only happens when the a/c unit is on. Cheers

try to clean the evaporator coil with coil cleaner. You can get it from a wholesale hvac/ref. supply store.

White vinegar works wonders. I killed cat pee stink in a bedroom's wood floors.

Check for another thread on here. We talked extensively about it.

The smell you are talking about is trimethyl amine.
It is a by product of the manufacture of the fiberglass insulation that is used. When fiberglass is under cured it will off gas formaldehyde. When over cured it will off gas trimethyl amine which is characterized by the smell of urine or dead fish. It's harmless but smells.

Humidity and temperature are triggers that will cause you to be able to smell it.

Thanks for the tip-I will hunt around and buy some coil cleaner and give it a try. We are willing to try anything as the smell is somewhat overbearing.

I have splashed some white vinegar around at the hope that it might remove the smell from the air? I went to the forum from Aug last year in regards to the trimethyl amine and this sounds very feasible as we are in Stuart FL at the moment and the humidity here would be close to 100% everyday and the temp around 90ish. Any idea how to stop the smell?
