Hello all,I have a catalina 28 and I was thinking of buying an 5000 BTU air conditioner. Is this big enought for this size boat. Were in Iowa where the high's are usually in the 90's and the lows in the 70's in the summerJason
AC unit on my Hunter 260. I can run it off my battery bank for 36 hrs thru an inverter or run it off a Honda 1K generator. It takes about 1.5 hours to go from 95 deg to 70 deg with the water about 60 deg, it seems to be quicker in the heat mode 40 deg to 75 in about 1 hr. Reverse cycle (heat mode). I have one outlet in the aft berth and two outlets on the port side admid ship. The unit is installed behind a false bulkhead aft port side. John USNret

I used a 6000 BTU window air-conditioner on a 35 ft O'Day for years. Only really needed it at night. 100 degree day -- 90 degrees below with low humidity, but at night could get to 60 degrees.
allow one BTU per pound per degree fahrenheit. and 1000 BTU per pound of water vapor plus the heat gain of one BTU per square foot per degree F. plus the solar insolation of about 250 watts per square yard. Plus the heat from the occupation of X number of people. Or just get a unit that you have the power to run and make do.
Thanks guys, I found a 5000 BTU model at bestbuy that I think will do. Has a very strong fan that should move lots of air. Now I just have to come up with the way to mount it in the hatch.Jason
