Air conditioner odors

I recently ran my A/C . It cooled very well however,the odor coming from it was very stale and smelled like odors coming out of the head.
Is there a way to "sweeten" it but not use any air freshners or perfumed treatments?

I've seen AC filters with air freshener built in. You probably need to clean the coil. They make a cleaner that doesn't require rinsing. I picked some up from a HVAC supply house.
