I have a binnacle-mounted Aquameter "Saturn" brand compass that has developed a large air bubble in the enclosure. Is there a way that this can be repaired? It does not seem to affect the operation of the compass - does it need to be repaired?

air bubble

there is a leak in a seal in the compass and the fluid has evaporated. It can be repaired; however I have a ritchie compass that I had overhauled and after $98.00 and $12 worth of shipping for sending it back two times for a leak it has lasted one year and now I have a bubble again. If I had it to do over I would buy a new compass. A small bubble will not affect the compass accuracy. Good Luck

Bubbled also!!!

The same thing happened to my Ritchie, But something really bizarre happened, I first noticed that a bubble appeared, left the boat for awhile, and upon return, noticed that the bubble had disappeared...WIERD!!! Perhaps increasing/decreasing pressure inside compass??

More information

I recently sent my compass in for refurbishing. The company that did the work has a good "check-off" sheet on the Internet. Go to http://www.andrewscompass.com/checkoff.html . Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

do it yourself

the compass is probably temperature compensated- the bubble may appear and disappear depending on the temp., but that doesn't mean you don't have a leak. i bought some odorless mineral spirits at home depot- west marine cost much more for the same thing. i filled the compass with a straw until the bubble disappeared.

Compass F-rose

I read once that if a compass gets frozen, an air bubble will appear. The book recommended removing the compass during layup. I had a slight bubble last spring that disappeared in the summer heat and re-appeared in the late fall. After this *$# winter, I may have a large bubble. go figure!
