Raymarine (aka Raytheon, aka Autohelm) tells me I have to buy a new control head and fluxgate compass (for lots of money) to update my AH4000 autopilot before I can interface it to my Garmin 162 GPS. Somehow I'm skeptical and wonder if anybody has already done this. The AH4000 has a NEMA connector. There seems to be very little information on the web describing the NEMA 0183 format, and even less information regarding the NEMA interface of the AH4000 autopilot. Can anyone send me in the right direction for this kind of information? Bob Miller Hunter 37C "Gusty Getaway"

Should be no problem

Connected my Garmin 48 to the 4000 using NEMA protocol. Don't know why it wouldn't work with the Garmin 162 using NEMA protocol. Having said that, I have yet to connect my 162 to the 4000 . . . . However p 80 of the manual gives pretty clear directions for wiring. Who did you talk to at Ray Marine? Or better yet, I'll post a note on the Ray Marine page of this forum and we'll see what they say.

Response

In case you missed the other thread, Bill provided the following: Reply to Garmin 162 and 4000 Guest Forum Other replies to this article: No Dedicated Data Ground Bill Boudreau This is a reply to Garmin 162 and 4000 No Dedicated Data Ground Submitted by Bill Boudreau of Salem, MA on 10/15 at 05:39AM regarding General_interest Our autopilot is looking for a NMEA IN and NMEA IN-. They do not have a NMEA OUT- , so you must tie our NMEA IN- pin to battery ground. Otherwise the interfacing should be straightforward. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
