Has anyone had a "stripped" keel nut that they couldn't get off as it just turns and doesn't tighten. If so, how did you get it off, I want to take it off and add a few washers to tighten that keel bolt up again. Suggestion appreciated.
Use the Dremel with a fiberglass-reinforced cutting disc. Much quicker and easier than the hacksaw route. Make two cuts, one each on opposite flats of the nut, parallel to the long axis of the bolt. It might be necessary to cut into the threads slightly, but usually when you get close to them you can split the nut with a cold chisel. Wish I had a buck for every one I've cut off exhaust studs.
Usually the threads are stripped just under the nut. If you take a screwdriver or a chisel and slide it between the hull and the nut and apply pressure in the outward direction (trying to pry it off) it will engage the threads enough to spin it off. I have done it many times in my work and know it works well.Fair windsGerry
You can get a nut splitter at sears. You put it over the nut and it has a blade like a cold chisel but you tighten it with a wrench and it splits the nut in half.dave
