Does anyone know of availability of an aftermarket wheel steering conversion kit for a Hunter 26?

Edison used to make one, but my understanding

is that they required quite a bit of room, both above and below deck. Our dealer strongly advised not to install one and Edison has dropped this option to the best of my knowledge. After extensive use of the tiller on our H26, I wouldn't give up the space to have one. Besides, with the stern rail seats, all lines run way aft, and a tiller extension, the boat is a kick in the fanny to sail. Then again, it's only my fanny. Ray sv Speedy

Think about it!

Think about the space you will sacrifice. Think about the fact that the "feel" will no longer be there. Think about have to run around the wheel to adjust a jib. Just THINK! You will agree that the tiller is the best control yet developed.

room is how you look at it

It's always interesting to hear comments about wheels from people that have'nt used one. I have found that it is more roomy with the wheel, expecially when I take non-sailors for a ride as I am not stuffing a stick in the stomach every time I tack or get a puff of air. The main sheet if easily controlled from all three seats and if I am single handing the head sail sheets are easy to step forward and reach with one hand on the wheel. There is a feel for the breezes in a wheel also, although at about 1/4 to half the pressure. This could be a problem for ham handed sailors that don't have much touch. I teach my students to have a light finger touch on the helm rather than the death grip which allows for very little feel.

A lot of dollars and work

You can get the parts needed from Edson and Hunter. Atleast $2000.00 and a great deal of work. I love my wheel steering especially when I have to motor a good bit on a long passage, but it may be better to appreciate the advantages that come with a tiller than to go for the benefits of a wheel. Look for a wheel on your next boat. Fair winds, Joe C. in NC

Have to agree with Jeff.

I have a 26 with a tiller. A friend has a new 260 with a tiller. Another friend has a 260 keel (before they called it a 270) with a wheel. I like the wheel for the same reasons that Jeff does. The only thing ya miss is controlling the helm from the stern rail seats. Well, I guess thats a big thing but you don't smack your guests with a wheel. alan

Jeff, does "ham handed" mean that only...

tiller people are smart enough to figure out that a "tiller requires reverse input"? Or possibly those without a salty brain (as in cured ham)now think that since it has been proven the world is round you must use a circular devise to steer, since a tiller is straight you will drive straight to h..., I mean over the edge. This discussion arises.....

...every so often. The Tiller People vs the Wheel People. I think the answer is very simple. You have more fine control with a tiller but you look much more cool and salty behind a wheel.
