Does anyone have aft winches installed on a 340 for the spinnaker? If so what size are they and how do you like them? It looks like a pretty easy job to add them since Hunter provides access panels and spots for mounting. I just want to be sure I get a reasonable size since they are $$$. Thanks for any advice!

Yep

Have them and love them on our 97 340. Use them for the spinnaker (obviously), but also occassionally for a sheet or halyard when reefing and needing the winches on the cabin roof. Cost - sorry, they were included with the original boat when the boat was originally commissioned with the spinnaker and related rigging. Size - sorry again as we currently have a blizzard outside. I'll see if I can get some data when I get home from the purchase documents. However, Hunter would give you good advice on the size. Why not just contact them via the link provided on the main page of this web site. Jim

Winch Size

I have the optional spinnaker winches installed on my '97 340. My dealer also installed a spinnaker halyard for me. Unfortunately I do nopt yet have a spinnaker. The winches are a pair of Lewmar 40's and I believe that they are what Jim Russell has on his boat also as this is what Hunter installed for this option. I feel they are adequately sized. The price from Hunter was considerably less than buying them separately from catalog. You might be able to get them from your Hunter dealer at a discount. There is a place to attach snatch blocks to the stern rail just behind the winches.

spinn winches

I have a spinnaker on my 340 but have not yet installed the rear winches. The owner's manual for the boat calls for Lewmar CST 30 winches (page 54B). I would use 30 or 40 winches. At present, I route my sheets through a block at the base of the rear pulpit and then track back to the primary winches. Someday I will get lewmar 40 winches mounted for the spinnaker.

Good idea...

I hadn't thought of using the primaries on the coachroof for the spinnaker but I think I'll give it a try, thanks for the idea! I suppose we could always add the aft winches later if needed...
