Aft Centerline Cabin Better?

I just got an '88 Legend 37. The aft cabin is on the centerline which subjects a great deal of the bed to the low ceiling. Is there some benefit to the berth not being horizontal? I have seen pictures of Hunter 34 with that layout. This would put the head of the bed on the port side which has no lazarette above it. Of course, I'll have to do a ton of carpentry...

Depends

I have had both. At anchor or at the dock I really liked the center line bed actually I guess I should say I prefered it. Sailing I prefer the horizontal bed. SO the question really is how much night sailing you expect to do where you will want to sleep in that bed. For example a center line master with a good sea berth may be ideal.

I have an 88 H40 - I prefer the inline queen!

In fact it was a deciding factor for me in my research of which 40 sailboat to purchase.

Either person in the bed can exit on their side without disturbing the person sleeping. I prefer rocking forward and back not side to side and into my wife when at anchor or sailing.

You can also try sleeping opposite - feet where head is. There's more head room on each side of the bed in this case as the pedestal extrusion is not in the way . My wife prefers this by far

Centerline is the way to go

We had a Hunter 37 Legend with the centerline berth and now have a Hunter 420 with the centerline berth. I wouldn't have anything else.

Sleeping head-to-feet still puts the genitalia in close proximity to each other. This ALWAYS leads to butt-bruising due to the low ceiling height, and lack of sleep.

In later models, the rear berth runs across the boat from port to starboard. I intentionally chose the older 88 model 37 Legend BECAUSE the bed runs fore to aft because I knew I would frequently sleep while underway sailing. When taking a trip with mixed crew I have them stow their baggage along sides of bed making a dam to keep from rolling out and I made a simple net that stretches tightly down the centerline of the bed to semi-separate it into 2 berths. No matter which way the boat heels one person rolls downhill to the baggage dam on their side while other person rolls downhill to the net divider. All folks who are able to sleep well on a boat can then sleep through rough sailing, storms, etc. w/o rolling on the floor and nobody has all the blood draining into their head. BUT< if my main sleeping time was at a dock, I might prefer the side to side arrangement. So, how do you intend to use your boat? Take your pick.

Definitely love the inline bed!

I prefer the inline bed rather than the aftwartship by a nautical mile.

Can sleep while sailing and at anchor when rolling sideways !
