Aft Cabin Leak

Hi all,

Our 2000 Hunter 460 aft cabin that we just purchased appears to have a leak that I noted while changing the sheets on the aft starboard cabin in the corner aft where the wall meets the bed. The sheets and under the bed were damp. We did have a recent hard rain but looking at the damage it does appear to have been going for some time. Thoughts?

Check your rub rail along the area. On my 2000 340 we had the same leak, same wall covering, same area.
That wall covering goes right up to the edge of the hull/deck seam and acts like a sponge.
I had to cut my wall covering away from the seam and applied a bead of clear sealer under the rub rail to eliminate the leak.
Could be something else, fix window seal etc. But check as high up as you can. From your picture, the area and look are the same as ours was.
You are showing only the bottom area, but is there an access panel above on that wall with about 20 screws in it. If there is, remove the panel and that’s where you will see the deck/hull seam.
My guess, had to be the same guy on the job back in 2000. It’s too identical.

our 2005 '38 had a similar leak and it was coming from the aft panel that sits directly behind the steering wheel. I pulled the panel and saw that the wires leading below were "caulked" in and just needed a good cleaning after pulling the panel and touching up caulk job. hope yours is as easy.

The roof panel has got a reverse lip on it which means that any water making it's way in will flow down the panel before getting caught by the lip and running along it to the lowest point where it eventually overflows. In short it could be any where. Dry it out and then test with a hose. In my case removing and resealing the pedestal bolts cured the issue.

Pressurize the cabin by sealing it off and cover companionway with piece of plastic taped to deck with small slit to insert leaf blower. Second person on deck brushing with soapy water looking for air bubbles escaping from cabin. Good way to find topside leakes the yards do
