Aft bulkhead removal on 260

In a recent photo article, (see attached photo) titled "installing pedestal" submitted by Jim Seamans, it shows the aft interior wood bulkhead removed, giving access to the area behind the bunk. After inspecting mine, I see there are screws holding the bottom of the bulkhead and an apparent groove in the ceiling panel that the top of the bulkhead is jammed into, and then top and bottom finished with a sealer. In the picture article the area looks nice and clean. I'm hoping that means there was no broken wood to get the bulkhead out. My question is, what is the best procedure for removing, and then replacing, this rear bulkhead? Brigg Franklin

Brigg, If I understand you, there is sealer around the top and bottom of the bulkhead? On mine there was nothing. The four screws attached the bottom of the bulkhead to the ridge. Once they were removed I just opened the starboard access door to the battery and pulled on the bulkhead. Pull out from the bottom until the top clears the groove. I then rotated the starboard end towards the bow and slid it out. Jim

Brigg, I've got a question

The picture shows a tank on the stbd side, is that a fresh water tank? Looks like it. My fresh water tank is all the way fwd, under the V berth. What gives? LOL

Looking aft it's on Port

In the picture,as in my 260, the holding tank is on the Port (left facing forward, right facing aft) side. The picture is taken looking at the stern (aft). My fresh water tank is also in the bow, (or have I been drinking from the wrong tank??).

The new 260's come with a platform

If you guys remove the rear berth wall, do not recaulk it. I wish Hunter would not do that. The platform on the port side is for the installation of the holding tank if you get a boat with the real commode. Mr. Seamons had that on his old boat and I know for a fact that was used alot. Right Jim? If the answere is yes, then that means you are full of blank. Opps Jimbo, I guess you got alot on me too. Dont tell folks about the time I caught a 20 pound striper with my car. Aft Bulkhead Removal

Crazy Dave- What's the purpose of the caulk? My 2001 is caulked at bottom but not at the top. Also the holding tank is tilted about one inch aft at rear of tank up off the platform. Somewhere in past posts someone built support under the tank for fear tank would warp. Is this tilted for a reason or faulty installation? Thanks Jesse Mulanax Hunter 260 EX*TA*SEA

Tilted Holding Tank

The holding tank is tilted because it gets pushed outward onto the curve of the outer hull when the cockpit shell is installed. This raises the rear of the tank and leaves one point of contact, the lower rear outboard corner, resting on the hull. Both hull and tank are in danger of rupture when the tank gets full and heavy. I notified Hunter about this installation defect and they apparently had never heard of the problem before. The only thing they or we can do about it is to raise the rear of the tank to take the weight off the hull. I don't think they will. I'm preparing a photo article to upload here showing this and other modifications I've made to the holding tank system. I'll also have more pictures on my web site when I finish the project. By raising the rear of the tank you also get better drainage out through the side outlet at the front of the tank Brigg..

Thanks Brigg

My boat has a platform for the tank but the tank is just not sitting flat on the platform. It's raised aft. Would post a photo but don't know how! Jesse

Jesse & Brigg

The caulking is for asthetics only. Personally, I usually remove that mess if ever removing the rear panel. If one corner of the holding tank is resting on the hull, I would concur that it should be shimmed up so not to press against the hull but I doubt it would cause any deforming of the hull from years of experience. I will inform Hunter of this. They usually listen to me. Crazy Dave Condon

Tilted holding tank

Thanks, I'll watch this site for answer and meanwhile I will take a closer look after I get the bulkhead out. Jesse
