Just off the top of my head, I recall seeing ads about a year ago for a short range radar for about $700. However, when I went looking for one to "see, feel, touch and hopefully try", all I could fins were the transmissiter/receiver in that price range, with the display unit being close to an equal amount or a minimum price range of approximataly $1500 to $2000 for the entire unit (Tx/Rx and Display unit). Did I somehow misunderstand the announcements or have dealers chosen not to stock the lower priced units? This would be for use on a Hunter 27, but i don't think that is particularly restrictive to itself. I seem to recall the radar ranbge being around 16 miles, which I assume would be the beam and return, and not a diameter? One specific question about ship board radar. I have heard that in a dense fog that they are useless in that the signal cannot penetrate dense fog. Is that true? Would that be equivalent to a term called "Inversion Layer", as might be found in larger search type radar units? Thank You, Bob E s/v Second Nature

SL72

The most inexpensive radar we make is the SL72. This is a stand-alone radar and scanner combination. It currently retails for about $1700 (Oct 00). This Radar does not have a Chart door or chartplotter capability. Also, it is NOT HSB compatible. This means that that it can not be connected to one of our HSB Chartplotter or Sounders and share video between two stations. The first in out line that can do this is the RL70 display. I am not sure what you were looking at for $700. I don’t know where your fog question is coming from. The Radar is going to be most useful in the fog. You might see some degradation in total range, but the radar will punch right through the fog in any range useful to collision avoidance on your boat.

furuno

2 years ago I bought a furuno 1621 for 1200 complete.I believe this model has been repaced by the 1721. The Furuno has a 16nm range and has been greeat on my Oday 30 along the coast of Maine.I think Cruising World had a review a couple of issues back and the Furuno and Ratheon pretty much tied in all catagories. You should expect to pay between 1200 and 1500 for a radar and display. Also you will have to figure in a mounting system either on the mast or a stand alone tower mounted off the aft quarter like I use. This system reduces weight aloft and can run close to 200 or so. good luck
