I have a Westerbeke 30B Three diesel, fresh water cooled. When I started it today, the fresh water temp alarm lit up and sounded intermitantly like it was a boarderline condition. The engine was cold so this can't be an actual water temp alarm. I turned it off and restarted it and the light and alarm were on solid. Does this sound like a faulty sensor or thermostat?

replace sending unit

It is not clear how long your engine ran the first time before the alarm went off. If you are confident it did not have time to warm up, then suspecting the sending unit is logical. If you are in doubt - run the engine until the alarm sounds and then take the thermostat housing off and use a cooking thermometer to check the temp of the water.

Not the Thermostat

It isn't the thermostat. The engine would still run and the warning indicator wouldn't come on until the heat rose to the warning level. As the previous poster suggested, it sounds like a faulty sender unit that is stuck. Easy to fix - just replace it. Caution: If you take the thermostat housing off, make sure the engine has cooled and there is NO PRESSURE in the system (carefully, loosen the pressure cap). You could end up severely burning yourself with a hot bath.
