Advice on selling Macgregor with bad trailer

Venture 21 Gulf Breeze
We have a 21ft 1983 Macgregor Venture. The boat is in great shape with all working rigs and sails, and we replaced the winch for the swing keel. So we feel that the boat still has a lot of life left in it; however, we haven’t used it I a few years and kept it covered. The trailer has rotted underneath it and is no longer roadworthy. It is barely supporting the weight of the boat. Even if we got a new trailer we absolutely cannot trailer the boat to a ramp to change it out. We have decided that we need to get rid of it and although we feel the boat is worthy of selling; it has no value if it can’t be trailered. So what would be our best option? Should we call a salvage yard? Would they be able to get it off our driveway with the trailer in really bad shape? If we donate it could they come get it without damaging the boat?

I am not intending to sell on this forum. I have used Craigslist many times before but in this instance I do not wish to have someone buy it without the proper means to trailer it off our drive and try take it down the highway. My intention is to get advice on the best way to get it gone in one piece.

If the trailer and boat could be winched up on a flat bed tow truck, I would advertise it for free with the stipulation that the buyer would have to have it hauled away by someone who could do the job...preferably an insured flat bed operator.

If the boat still has value, I'd try the same thing but put a realistic price on it. It'll be a hard thing to sell though. You never know. Someone out there on craigslist may know of a good trailer looking for a boat, and your bad trailer may not be much of an issue for them. You won't know if you don't advertise it.

It's going to be a lot of work to move, but try listing it on CL in their free section. Worth a try.

I would list it just as you describe and see what happens. You never know what people are looking for and what lengths they may take to get a good deal. I once sold an old 650 BSA at a bike show. The guy came down with a Goldwing and a trailer behind it to haul it back to his state.

For sure, let folks negotiate with you. Heck, I'd buy it and come with my own trailer if all is in working order and closer to Seattle! Sadly, my trailer suffered the same fate... The trailer I am using was good for only the few blocks from a local ramp to my home, but I did notice that putting straps around the frame helped give the whole trailer more rigidity. Are the axle and hubs/wheels serviceable? My V21 is now up on stands as other project work ensues...like locating a good trailer!

Good luck!

I have a flat bed trailer and would be happy save another V21.
Location is everything.

Where is Candlewood? We have lots of museums in Tacoma, WA...LeMay has one for cars and there is a motorcylce one, not to mention the Boeing Field Museum of Flight in Seattle...is there a major sailboat museum somewhere? We could start a Venture/Macgregor one! :)

Happy sailing!
