I have an '83 Niagara with the original Navtec rod rigging. While taking down the mast last fall for winter storage a shroud got caught in a spreader and the rod was bent almost 90 degrees, fairly tightly. We were able to straighten it out, but the question is do I now have a weak spot I should be concerned about. There is no evidence of discoloration or other marks where we straightened the rod.

You probably already know the right answer

I don't have rod rigging, but usually metal is weakened by that much bend, and re-bend. Consider the consequences being out on Lake Huron in a heavy blow, and you're on the tack with the bent shroud. Not where I'd want to be;) Patiently waiting for spring, Eric

A call to Navtec will probably get the same answer

Maybe it's a good time to replace all of it. But you're on a lake. Still, a call won't hurt.

Most "experts" call for rod rigging to last about 20 years before needing replacement due to safety concerns. At the very least, the bent shroud on your boat should be replaced before using the rig again. Unless you WANT to suddenly turn your sailboat into a powerboat at the most inopportune moment.

any idea on rod pricing

Thanks guys, I kind of knew this all along .. but wishing thinking was taking advantage of me. Its all about safety for sure. I haven't replaced rod before. Any ballpark price on what I might be looking at for a shroud that's likely 30 ft in length with fittings? John

Lake Huron is a little more than "lake". It's a GREAT Lake! Bayfield is on the Ontario side (east), and generally the leeward shore. I've been out there and it's probably the closest thing you'll get to being on an ocean, without going to the coast;). There's no protection once out there, other than getting into a harbour!:)

Eric, sorry. I was too short with my post.

I didn't mean to refer to the 'lake' as being un"difficult". I was thinking of saltwater corrosion. That's what killed my shrouds in the Caribbean. Again, sorry for the short post. P.S. I've heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Sorry, I missed your point as well:). I tryed to convey a gentle reply, and added :) to support that. Had we been sitting together, you would not have sensed any bad feeling:) Regards, Eric
