I'm getting ready to install an extra set of teak handrails on the deck of my 1985 H40. These will be forward of the existing two sets, and provide a bit more secure handhold when going forward in choppy conditions. My question is what I should expect when I drill through the deck. 3" stainless bolts will be held in place with oversized washers and locknuts. They will come through the deck in the v-berth area. I plan on using butyl tape to help seal the holes.

If you must do it, (more holes are the last thing a boat needs and look out for the wire runs) then drill oversized holes for the bolts and completely fill them with epoxy bog and re drill the smaller required holes for the bolts when cured. This will help stop core damage when they start to leak. You still need sealant around the bolts of course. A better solution but more expensive would be to extend aft the solid stainless pullpit rail which would make a more usable hand hold.
