ADVICE ON HOW TO REMOVE A FUEL TANK-O'DAY 28

Very Carefully!!

John, The O'28 2 slips down from me just had to do the same thing. He had to unscrew the front and one side (quarter berth side)of the mounting bed and work it until it came loose. It was a bear of a job as all of the wires hanging down over the engine had to be moved so it could come out into the cabin. I haven't looked at it closely on mine, but maybe taking the port side support out would let you take it out through the locker. Really need to do some measuring and homework on this one. My neighbor had a whole new custom tank built about a 1/4" smaller all around so it would be easier to get back in. He didn't want to take the chance of fixing the one spot were it had rotted through and then 3 months down the road have to do it again if another showed up that was not detected the first time. I probably would do the same thing. Good luck, PM

Removing fuel tank

John - Don't know abt the 28, but on my 27 I have a Tempo 10.5 gal plastic tank that was too big to come out via the cockpit locker : had to remove the partition forming the inside wall of the stbd locker to access the thing, and remove the cables & sheaves for the Edson pedestal steering to get enuf vertical clearance to lift the tank out of its' base, then take it out thru the port quarterberth. Empty the tank first: its hard to handle if there's any amt. of fuel in it. There are probably wires & control cables that will have to be moved too. Pain in the butt, however I'm glad I went to the trouble 'cause there was a fair bit of dirt & crud in the tank. Now my tank is squeaky clean & I'm VERY careful abt. keeping it that way by pre-filtering any fuel that I add.

Universal or OMC

If you have the saildrive, removing it to get to the fuel tank is easy. the Universal Diesel is a bit tougher.
