Advice on fibre bushing stern bearing!

Has anyone changed the original stern bearing with fibre bushing?

My VEGA is #641, 1969. My marina advisors - all with conventional cutlass bearings - believe the level of shaft movement is too great and they would replace the cutlass bearing. However I do not have exessive vibration or water leakage under power.
With snow melting and on the hard, now is the time to consider replacing the shaft (slight wear and drip under power), stuffing box (slight leak), and the stern bearing if necessary. But how to remove and install that push-fit bushing seems like my mountain!!
Any experience, suggestions/'how to' would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi David

It is not an easy job as it entails taking the combi apart and removing
from the engine. A horrible job until youhave done it once or twice. If it
is Ok then leave well alone.

Replaced mine with new one from sweden. Cutless bearing is easy to remove,
once you get shaft out. Getting combi- apart and back together is still not
easy after four times. Used Don Angels instructions. Am replacing with new
Beta diesel. By the way, had just as much movement w/ shaft as I did with old
bearing. Jim.
