I'm writing to ask for good results in caring for the exterior teack on our '94 Hunter 37.5 Legend, specificall the captain's chair, hand rails, door trim, etc. We use teak oil in side the boat. Not sure if some of our outdoor wood trim has previously been varnished or just oiled. We bought the boat used 2 years ago. We are also trying to refinish the dinette table which is stained with food oils. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. We are thinking about lightly sanding the surface and doing some polyurethane to keep it well protected. This is my first post here. Sailing is getting a late start in Chicago due to rainy, cool and high wind days so far on weekends... hope to be out soon! Thanks in advance for your advice! Gail Sussman Miller

...because there are a lot of right answers. In SoCal, on my 40.5, the exterior teak is refinished every other year with an exterior polyurethane with a UV inhibitor. An example is Helmsman Spar Exterior Poly, available at most hardware stores. The teak is covered normally. The cabin area is also varnished (polyurethane) but in a semi-gloss execpt the cabin sole which is gloss. It is five coats; the rest is three. The salon table needs to get clean. Use an acetone to get the oil out and a light sanding (it's a veneer) before finishing. Three coats should do you fine. I'd suggest taking the table out to do it at home. Good luck, Rick D.

Tell you how I do mine
My teak was in really poor shape when I bought the boat. I took most of it off sanded it down and put 4 coats of cital on it. Now I just add one coat a year and have had no problems at all. Practical sailor rated Cetal very good and after using it I would agree.

Cetal or Cetol?
Richard - I've seen "Cetol" mentioned before. Did you mean Cetol or is there another product called "Cetal"? I just put StarBrite Teak Oil on my stern rail seats and new (replacement) cockpit coaming pads (not a lot of teak on my H23.5). That's all I did. Did I do the wrong thing? Can I apply another product after oiling? I also have new teak pieces for the companionway door and the hatch slider handle. I haven't done anything to them yet, and haven't installed them yet either. I can at least do them right if I did the wrong thing with the other pieces mentioned. ...RickM...

I only use a good varnish on my teak, I start with a 50/50 thinned base coat and then 6 coats sanded every other coat. Just needs a light sanding and a coat every spring.

Sikkens Cetol
I put Cetol on my boat's teak a couple years ago and it has held up great. Not as pretty as varnish (kind of orangy in color) but I believe it holds up better in sunlight.
