Its time to buy a new mainsail. Does anyone have any advice to give? Are there any one-design boats that use a main with the same dimensions as the h22?? I remember an old post where someone mentioned that J24's had the same dimensions for a h22 headsail. Does everyone with a h22 use a mainsail with lugs along the luff that feed into the mast?

Compare prices at the next boat show. Actually prices right here on this site aren't too bad, either. Most sailmakers use a similar software with a large database of boats to determinre the specs for a sail. There can be customizing specs, also. Where the difference is, is the type of sailcloth that they use. They each have their favorites. Your best bet is to get them at a show where they are in a competitive nature and work out the best deal for yourself. Also keep in mind that most production-boat sails are made offshore, now. This keeps the labor cost down. So ask the right questions re: cloth type, warranty, turnaround, etc. I bought a new main for my L37 last fall at the Newport show and was surprised at the results. It was built domestically and was ready in 2-3 weeks. Good Luck.

What kind of sailing?
It depends on what kind of sailing you do. Do you sail in light winds mostly or high winds? Do you daysail and cruise or do you race? If you don't race then I'd get a no batten sail with no headboard. you'll lose 15% sail area but won't notice the difference unless you are racing. You will notice and love the ability to raise and lower the sail on any point of sail though.

...dimensions of another boat? No 2 boats of the same manufacturer are the same, never mind different manufacturers. Have your sail maker come and measure your rig. That way you are sure to get the right sail with the best shape. He will also be able to recommend the type and weight of cloth to use, and there are plenty of choices.

Check the link to Bacon & Associates site - they have a ton of used sails in various conditions. I like the fact that they list the specs and dimmensions of your sails. Ebay also sells sails. Good luck!

I mentioned that the j24 headsails fit our boats just to give people information for a source to get inexpensive and good quality sails. I have not liked my main since I bought the boat I think it is to small, but it is hard to get a sailmaker to come out and measure and get a quote on such a small purchase, I have tried two diffrent sailmakers. The online used sail lofts are good a friend got a main for his boat and was very happy with its quality and fit. Good luck with your shopping.
