Oday 22 Spring Hope NC
Hello all,
I have come across a neglected O22 and need to pick your brains. Right now it is sitting on blocks with about 12'' of water in it, been that way for a few years I'd guess. There is no fwd hatch, I can see some delamination in the plywood around the opening. I am concerned about that. The interior has beeen stripped out, bulkheads are still there and installed. There is a mast, boom, sails and sail cover included. There is no rudder, and some of the hardware is missing also. I am most concerned about the cabin roof and the water "in" the boat. I guess I could purchase this "project" and if all else fails part it out. Feel free to chime in with your opinions.

What A Shame

It is such a shame to see this boat has been neglected to the point that it is considered salvage, and the only fate it has is an appointment with the chain saw. To make matters worse, he also has a 23' Kells in the same condition. But he is under the impression that they can both be saved, good luck with that! The Oday was the better of the two! I want to thank those who gave me thier opinions. I got the answers I expected.

You can't save them all Sloopy. By the time you got through fixing this boat up, you would have a boat with a low book value and the money that you put into it would have been equal to the price of a post 1974 O'Day 23 in excellent condition. If you can find an O'Day 22 with a keel/centerboard at a good price, you may consider buying it, but the stubby keel O'Day 22s, unless they're in excellent condition, you're better off passing it up. They're a fun little cruising sailboat, but they don't have the upwind sailing abilities of the full keel, or keel/centerboard boats.

AND, you would spend a freaking fortune in time and treasure getting that boat up to sailing condition.
I am all for fixing up a boat, but I don't want to spend two or three years and 15 grand fixing up a boat that would be worth about 4k if you HAD to sell it. Shoot, there are just too many other boats to choose from.
Too bad though....
