Need a little advice. I lost my mast. Broke about 12 ft over the deck.(a tree felled by Katrina.) Had major damage to the stern rail. I had a surveyor inspect the boat, no other damage to be found. I have looked since for a used mast, with no luck. New mast and rigging costs, has me questioning, do I want to sell as is or spend the bucks to replace the mast and all? This boat has all the trimmings, a/c, 12v refrigeration, 4000+auto-pilot, propane stove, electric head, new cushions, binimi, etc, etc. This is a good heavy duty boat for coastal cruising. I don't think I would ever find a replacement as good as this boat. My question is, to those of you who sail these boats, what would you do? Do you think I should cut my loses and sell as is, or buy a new mast and rigging? I would appreciate your opinions.

Insurance?

Danny: Don't you have insurance? Have you priced out the mast & stern rail so you know what your investment may be? I would check around at the marine junk yards for a replacement. You may also want to contact Rig-Rite in Rhode Island. I think that your mast may have been a Kenyon.

Get the rigging if you want to sail.

If you get rid of the boat, are you going to get another sailboat? If so, then keep the one you have - and upgrade. You may find out that this is a perfect time to upgrade to a newer system like a main furling. I certainly would love the convenience of furling the head and main. Another option is to find a boat with similar mast that has no salvage capabilities and buy it just for the mast. I have seen boats sell for a couple hundred bucks on E-Bay. You may have to look a while but, you have gone this far. Fiberglass - you should try to do this yourself. Get a book. You would be surprized what you can do with the right instruction from books. The beauty of glass is that you can take out what you messed up without much consequence. If you do the lay-up, you could get a professional to do the gelcoat. That would be a huge cost savings right there.

Even if it costs you a copule thousand, where you gonna get a boat that good for that much?
