I have rust and Mold stains on the sails of a boat that I just purchased. Other than being stained in some spots they are in perfect condition. Does anyone have any idea if there is anything I can use to pretreat and remove the stains? Can sails be washed at home or is professional cleaning a must? Thanks for any help.

I HAVE AN 83 O'DAY AND I'D HIGHLY RECOMMEND A THOROUGH PROFESIOONSAL CLEANING FOR THE WINTER AND ADD RUB STRIPS IF IT DOESN'T HAVE IT ASND HAVE THEM CHECK SEAMS AT THE SAMR TIME. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY DURING YOUR NEXT SAIL DAVE

Mixed Success

I agree with Dave about having your sails inspected and cleaned if they are still serviceable or can be made so. But why not try this innocuous solution first. I have removed some gundge using Ivory soap flakesl, warm water and a scrub brush. Lay the sails out on the lawn. However, you have mentioned the 2 hardest stains to remove from Dacron. I have had some limited success using a "mild" synthetic stain remover. Be careful though and try it in a small test patch. You do not want to weaken the fabric by using anything that will attack the fabric. If it was me I'd try the home remedy first and migrate to a sail cleaning service if you don't like your results. Good luck. Don

Sail cleaning

The folks at sailcare.com have done amazing stuff with the sail cleaning process. The price comparison list shows a remarkably affordable cost for smaller boats. The cost to clean a set off of our other boat (a 26') was under $200, if memory serves correctly.

Thank you Jake for the info on Sailcare.com. I have bookmarked the site and will probably use them after the season. Regards, steve!
