I like some advice on a new sanitation system. This gets rather lengthy, so I’ll put it in two posts; the first (this one) will be a description of what I plan to do and the second some questions on possible alternatives. For those of you who can bear with me thanks! I purchased a Pearson 323 a year ago. The bladder holding tank fell apart when I picked it up to look under it. I had a boatyard place whatever they could in so we could sail this summer and she now has a 9 gal rectangular Todd tank. In spite of much cleaning and conversion to KO there was still much odor by the end of the season. At season’s end I removed all, tank, hoses, and head. I plan replacing the tank with a 14 gal, either Ronco or Raritan. (Ronco has a 17 gal that is a very tight fit. Considering the straight lines of the tank and the curved lines of my boat I do not trust my measurements enough to accept ¼ inch allowances.) I’ve read Peggie Hall’s article praising Ronco and heard many good things about Raritan. The tank will go in the starboard v-berth locker. I’m thinking about a tank monitor. Any experience with these? Any thoughts appreciated. I plan on replacing all hoses with SeaLand hoses as suggested in Practical Sailor. I’m still thinking about rigid PVC runs for part of it, but I think I’d rather pay the $8/ft than the extra time working with PVC and fiddling with fasteners to it keep it from banging around. Again, thoughts appreciated. I’ll replace the anti-siphon valves also. The water intake does not have an anti-siphon valve now so I will install one. The low cost W/C head works fine. I’ll replace it until it fails and then put a better head in. It appears to be quite easy to un-install/install so a delay in that expense seems reasonable. I’ll be making a new platform for the head. The old one fell apart and seemed to be the main source of odor. I suspect the PO had a slow steady leak from the head for a long time and the wood platform was continuously soaked. I will not re-do the vent as suggested in Peggie's article yet. The logistics of doing so are no more difficult after everything is installed than they would be now and I’m not quite ready to start cutting holes in my hull. Because it is a small tank it will be emptied every two weeks or so and thus getting a fresh supply of air. I’d like to see what happens with all “good” equipment and following Peggie’s KO protocol before making this change. Well, that’s my head plans for this winter. However, assuming two heads to be better than one I’d appreciate any thoughts and advice you folks may have. Some thoughts, but not in the plans, are in another post. Thanks Geoff

Question;

You say you still have odor...is the odor only out the tank vent, or is it in inside the boat? If you have odor inside the boat, the tank cannot be the culprit unless it's leaking. If you have odor out the vent, replacing the tank won't cure it unless you re-route the vent. There's no way a 17 gallon tank can last you two weeks unless you rarely do more than day sail, with only an occasional night aboard. 2-3 days with two people aboard full time will fill it. I wouldn't even consider less than 25 gallons if it were my boat, which is what I believe the original OEM tank, which was made by Kracor, was...and that's not enough to last you two weeks either, but at least should be enough to get 4 people through a 3 day weekend.
