I have a 1976 Catalina 27 which has a marine head that is a direct to the water flush and has no msd. I don't want to go through the cost and work of adding a holding tank. Therefore I'm going to buy a portable head. I have one now that is a 2.5 gal but the seat is like it's for a little person so I've never used it. I''ve been looking at the Thetford 465 because it can be pumped out.

In doing my research it appears that there are 2 models of the 465. The 25110 for marine and the 25111 for carry off. Here are my questions.

Am I correct on those part numbers?

Can the marine one also be carried out as well as hooked up for pump out?

And the most important question of all: Will a 250lb person's butt fit it?

All portapotties are pretty close to the same size...

The only real difference is height.. So the seat on a new one is gonna be the same size within fractions of an inch as the one you have now.

Those numbers have to be some retailer's item numbers. The only difference as far as the mfr's model names/numbers are concerned is whether any model is an "MSD" model or not. "MSD" designation means its designed to be permanently mounted, plumbed for pump out. No "MSD" means portable only. So the 465 MSD can be permanently installed...the 465 is the portable version. (What is the fascination all of a sudden with a battery operated portapotty???) The 365 and 365MSD are the non-electric version of the same size system.

Yes, the MSD versions can be carried off the boat, but you need to know that a full 5-6 gallon tank weighs about 50 lbs...so you'd be smart to plumb it for pumpout. You'd only need a vent line and vent thru-hull, a deck pumpout fitting and some hose...and it'll make your life a LOT easier.

As for whether a 250 lb butt will fit...the seat is a standard size toilet seat. I think your main problem with the one you have is height, or rather lack of it. You should find the 5-6 gal model a lot more comfortable.

Is the opposite true? I was just given (as in free) a brand new "visa potty 248" made by Sanitation Equipment Limited, which is designed to be carried off.. but the only difference I can see between this one and their "marine" version is a different outlet (90 degree elbow designed to hook up to a hose) and the inclusion of a mounting bracket. Can a 'portable' version be permanently mounted given the use of a proper outlet connection and some imaginative mounting?

Cheers,
Brad

If the tank is vented, yes...

There has to be a source of air to replace contents as they're pumped out, otherwise the pumpout pulls a vacuum that prevents anything from being pulled out...and if the pumpout is particularly strong, it can even implode the tank. So all portapotties that are designed to be pumped out need two fittings--a vent line fitting and a pumpout hose fitting.

I've never heard of Sanitation Equipment Ltd...and they seem to actually TRY to say as little as possible on their website. :) I find it a bit strange that a company in CO that's been around for more than 50 years would show capacity only in liters, not in US gallons...and their tanks sizes are totally unique...the Visa that you were given offers a choice between 2 or 5 gallons. I did finally find a vented holding tank on their parts page, though.

If yours is the larger size, it would be worth trying to figure out how to install it for pumpout. But if it's the smaller 8 liter tank, it's not worth the effort...easier just to carry it ashore than mess with pumpouts.
