We are contemplating buying a used Moorings boat; Hunter 433. But owner states that (engine-driven) refrigeration didn't work, so he disconnected it about 5 years ago! Is it worth getting an estimate to refurbish, or should we just simplify and get two air-cooled models for now? Thank you.

Usually a motor driven compressor can be rebuilt. I depends on how you want to use the boat, but I would think it is worth looking into. Do you know if the compressor is froze up or will it still turn over. If it is still free, it is probably worth having a technician look at it. It may have a leak in the system that will need to be repaired and then they system will need to vacumed and recharged, but any good ref. tech. can give you a good estimate. The engine mounted unite is good if you are going to be at the boat every day, but if you expect to be gone for a week or so and come back to cold beer, you had best use the second unit. Maybe a combination of both would be good. Good luck.

Adler/Barbour is installed on most Moorings boats. If you call the factory, we can supply you with the model number for the system that is right for your boat. Engine driven systems can be very powerful, however, if it has been down for 5 years, there may be many other issues which need to be looked at. The best thing to do is get an estimate to repair and compare that cost along with the cost of a new system.
