Adjusting Oil Pressure Gas Atomic 4 Engine

Hi.....Everyone has been so helpful in the past, so I have another Q: I may want to adjust the oil pressure on a Gasoline Atomic 4 engine, installed and original, on a 1979 Cat 27. The oil pressure with a warm engine, at about 1000 RPM, fluctuates slightly, but averages around 29 PSI. I know where the adjusting bolt/screw is located, and know the size of the holding nut. How much of a clockwise turn on the screw is needed to raise the oil pressure 10 to 15 PSI? Is it even necessaty? The engine idles at about 800 RPM and indicates about 24 PSI. Or, how much does a 1/2 turn increase/decrease the oil pressure? Or a full turn? And can I adjust the oil pressure with the engine running? Whew! Alot to think about! Just got the Cat 27 last fall and LOVE 'er! Thanx in advance!

Adjusting A-4 Oil Pressure Nut

Hi Jim, Your oil pressure sounds just fine for a 20 year old A-4. Remember, it is going to have some wear from its years of service, and I believe it is the crankshaft bearings that wear first and allow the pressure to drop over time. If you crank it up too much, you run the risk of forcing oil around a seal - not a good thing. I tried to adjust mine about a month ago - could not do it. The screw would not budge. As it turns out, there is a locking nut below it, so you will need to loosen that first. Then, if you really want that 40-45 psi, I would try running the engine to see if there is any change in oil pressure. If not, I would try adjusting it with the engine off. I recommend this only because I have a 1979 C-27 also, and I know how tight the engine cave is. Ugh... Anyway, the pressure should be around 40-45 at cold start, then drop to around 20 under normal operating temperatures. I got these figures from the owners manual and other A-4 owners. I get about a constant 19 psi right now, and the engine has run very well at this pressure for the last 3 years. I still plan to adjust it, but I don't plan to bring the pressure beyond 30 psi. I figure the engine is over 20 years old now, so I am not going to push her too hard. Since there is no oil filter on the engine, the only thing the pump needs to do is recirculate oil, rather than force it through a filter. Let me know how you make out - I am interested in the results. Rob P.S. - If you haven't given the engine a full tune up in the last year, I would recommend it enthusiastically. I let mine go for a season, and my engine failed (at the dock, luckily) due to a worn rotor. A whopping $2.59 part...

Thanx to Rob in TX

Rob.... I think I will hold off now re: the engine oil pressure adjustment. Did I ever update you on chainplate repairs? We got it done for a really fair price, and tested them last Friday in 22 knot winds. Lemme know. Jim

No - what was your resolution?...

And how do you like it? Thanks - Rob

Chainplate Repairs Cat 27,1979

Last January we had the main chainplates repaired by the local boat yard. They did an excellent job at a very reasonable price. They cut out the portion of the rotted wood on the bulkheads-port and starboard-- and kerfed in new teak. Then they took 1/8" aluminum sheeting and form-fitted on each side of the bulkheads, over the remaining good bulkhead wood and the old wood. Then they rebolted the chainplate thru the "sandwiched" aluminum plating and the new wooden teak bulkhead. They form-fitted the aluminum sheeting to the overhead and sides of the bulkheads. The aluminum sheeting is obviously on the outer sides of the bulkheads. It looks as if it is original construction. Of course, they also screwed the aluminum plating to the remaining and new and old teak wood. Cost was $1400.00 less a 5% discount for winter work. Then they painted it a matching brown, and put on moulding trim around the entire repaired area. We had the repair procedure approved by a naval architect/surveyor prior to doing the repair work. I do not have a scanner, so no pix available. Hope this helps anyone out there who needs this type of repair. Write me if anyone needs more exacting procedures, etc., etc.
